Mid-air collision over the Potomac river

On January 25, 2025, a black chopper helicopter from Kansas and American flight 5324 from D.C. collided over the Potomac River. The collision caused a catastrophic explosion before both aircrafts crashed into the water, killing all passengers on board.

The plane contained several figure skating champions and lawyers. Out of 64 people on board, 41 have been found, and 28 have been identified. The remaining bodies will not be investigated until the plane can be retrieved from the river.

As a result of the crash, air traffic has been delayed significantly around the area, and questions are being raised upon the aircraft safety protocols around the D.C. area. Investigators recovered a “black box”, or cockpit voice recorder, in good condition from the helicopter and plane. The National Translation Safety Board expects to recover all data from the crash.

The control tower at Reagan airport was reportedly understaffed at the time of the crash. This likely resulted in communication problems between the pilots, causing confusion over air traffic, a simple but fatal mistake in such a congested airway. The Federal Aviation Administration has shut down the helicopter corridor the helicopter came from, as just a day before another aircraft coming from the corridor had veered dangerously close to a busy airway. Beginning today, the Federal Aviation Agency will be banning all helicopter traffic around the Potomac river and the Regan airport until the investigation of the crash is complete. Helicopters will be allowed in emergency situations, but the FAA hopes to increase the safety of the airway, protecting both helicopters and planes until their safety is assured.

If airlines fail to enforce proper protocol, or keep their divisions properly staffed, flying becomes a risk for all. Such a crash raises concern for our safety measures and the steps we take to enforce them. We are guaranteed to learn more information soon, as this tragic accident happened so recently.
